  • these people really don't understand that they don't have enough time to have the owner of the house look through and approve every single item. It's gotten to this point and stuff has to be hauled out fast. Not only that but if they see everything they'll keep everything, or most everything. This way they get rid of stuff that the owner of the house had completely forgotten they had and therefore won't miss,

  • The house was filled with stuff. Even trash was collected. If a horder starts to collect empty plastic cobtainers from yoghurt, ketchup and such things that means that the person lost controll over the addiction to collect and spend all the money. Can not go and buy things to collect. Is left with collecting trash and empty containers. That woman is on that level of this illness. She did great. But she might start to collect again soon. Hording is an ADDICTION. It is like any other addiction. Like alkoholism. You can talk someone into getting sober, but that person will return to alcohol quick as a rubbef band. And that is the same with hording. The change needs to come from inside the person. It is very rare that someone wants a change for themselves. But only that way it can work. Still it is a hard life beeing an "anonymous horder" or an "anonymous alcoholic". You are facing that addiction every day.

  • I honestly can understand why and how she got to this point. Material things stay with her when everything else has left her. She said that she bought two of everything thinking that if she did, it would bring her son back. The only hoarding I really don’t understand is when it involves animals or animals that have died in the home, or homes that have literal trash in it. I don’t get that. But someone that collects things to ease the pain of other things, I can understand that.

    • If she needs by addiction to go out 365 days a year and buy at least one thing. And we know she will not buy one book, she ll buy as much as she can carry... than the money is flying away fast. She can not cook in her kitchen, so the spending continues with take outs or pizza delivery service. On one point there is no money left... but the urgent need to collect is still there. Now the "collectors" understand that they are horders. That is the breaking point. When the house is horded and the money for cleaning is gone- they start to collect trash, animals, whatever is available. The cat or the ketchup bottle does not make a difference. Bc nothing else is there to collect. When they finally realize that their brains had lied to them for years, telling them they are "collectors" and that they can sell all that stuff, but they are broke and get anxiety attacs about the idea of selling something, its time for a shock. After that they are overwhelmed and depressed. Its too much. They can not handle the moldy kitchen, the dead cat here and there, the smell, the poverty, the asthma, the shame. System shuts down. The brain starts to be tired, to forget, they feel numb. They do not need a cleaning team. They need a good psychologist. Its an addiction. Like all addicted people you can force them to get sober, but they ll be back to the drug fast. They need to want it inside themselfs. They need to ask you for help. They need someone who is capable to handle and understand addiction behaviour. It is very hard to save an alcoholic and so it is with a horder.

  • I too was a hoarder at one time, my long time love had died. I ended up with four storage units a huge barn and my house filled, I let it all go!! I knew I was not strong enough to go through it all. I kept what would fit in a 16’ uhaul, sold my house and moved to the beach. Best decision I ever made, I’ve never looked back and now I limit myself to how much I have at any given time. I feel for everyone of these people.
